What is VoIP?
About the RGT Voice over Broadband (VOB) Network
1. Underlying technologies
RGT’s VOB network is a Nationwide Broadband Network that
uses ADSL as its basic access links.
It is a wholly secure proprietary private
network dedicated only to RGT’s customers but uses open
standards and interfaces to facilitate easy connectivity to
other networks including
the UK PSTN and the Internet.
RGT achieves this through the inter-working
of its unique network termination equipment, which is located
at the customers
premises,
and its core network call management, switching systems,
and routers which are in the heart of its network. RGT’s
network termination equipment has been developed to interface
directly with any of the UK’s most popular PABX’s,
immediately making them IP enabled.
This technology has been developed by UK experts in the application
of IP technology and is exclusive to RGT.
2. Operating Standards
Through the inter-working of its network elements RGT is able
to offer 99.99% network availability to its end users, i.e.
compared to 99.94% which is the more normal standard for
Broadband based offerings. This means RGT’s network
is directly comparable to PSTN standards of availability.
Finally through application of QoS service management techniques
RGT can ensure that should our customers choose to use the
network for both voice and data then priority will be give
to voice to ensure call quality is not impacted.
3. Network Benefits
3.1. Quality and cost
All of RGT’s customer to customer calls will be carried
on RGT’s network. They will not be transmitted via the
internet. Customers who have multiple sites connected by the
RGT VOB network will effectively be given their own Virtual
Private Network across which their inter site calls will be
carried.
This has two advantages;
•
All calls are carried over a fully managed environment, and
•
Calls will be transmitted free of charge when they remain
on net.
All other calls will be carried on RGT’s
network to the point of interconnect with the Public Switched
Telephone Network
(PSTN) and will be delivered to the called party in the usual
way.
Should customers have international branches
or associates we can implement a secured path through the Internet
to allow
free on net calls between sites.
3.2. Asset life extension – future
proofing
Because RGT’s network termination equipment enables existing
PABX’s for IP telephony, there is no need to upgrade
or replace existing equipment to realise the many benefits
that IP telephony can bring. Importantly, as well as avoiding
unwanted costs, this ensures that customers do not have to
be disrupted or change their internal set ups to realise these
benefits.
3.3. Business continuity and Risk management
Once connected to the RGT VOB network for inbound and outbound
traffic Customers can take full advantage of the network’s
inherent ability to provide enhanced business continuity
capability. In case of inability to access an office for
any reason or in case of service disruption, calls can readily
be diverted to other designated answering points on the RGT
network. This might be another branch office or to the homes
of key workers who are equipped with an RGT VOB Home worker
facility. This offers an inexpensive method of addressing
a Director’s Duty of Care with respect to continuity
of communications.
3.4. Number portability
Once a Customer’s numbers are ported to the RGT VOB network
moving premises outside the local code boundary is no longer
a problem. RGT can ensure that your numbers move with you.
3.5.Convergence
RGT’s VOB network is capable of carrying both voice and
data services simultaneously. Should customers wish to take
advantage of the economies and efficiencies this will bring,
RGT’s QoS Service Management capability can prioritise
voice and data traffic in line with the individual customer’s
requirements.
3.6. Mobility
Customers who are connected to the RGT VOB Network will be
able to access their network securely from anywhere where
they can connect to a broadband connection. This could be
via a WiFi hotspot in an airport, café, or Motorway
Service Station, or via a broadband connection at a Hotel
or at an associate’s office. They would then be able
to make and receive calls as if they were in their own office.
